The 12th and last in the series of the Chicago screenings
of the L.A. Rebellion touring film
series, will take place this Friday June
7, with a screening of a newly restored print of filmmaker Larry Clark’s seminal 1977 feature
film, Passing Through.
The film deals with a jazz musician, recently released
from prison and refusing to play for the powers that be, who control the music
industry. Looking for inspiration and a sense of purpose he searches for his
musical mentor, Poppy Harris (played by Clarence
Muse).
The film is a fusion of fiction documentary and concert film with a brilliant
score featuring the music of Charlie Parker,
John Coltrane and Sun Ra and was
called by one French critic as “the
only jazz film in the history of cinema.”
And the filmmaker himself Larry Clark, will be present for the
screening
And along with Passing Through, there will be a screening
of Charles Burnett’s whimsical 1995
short film When It Rains, which has
been called “a jazz-blues riff on community life surely stands as a masterful
condensation of his unique blend of (Yasujiro) Ozu’s stark but deliberate
framing and (Roberto) Rossellini’s neorealism”. And all that in just a
13 minute short.
The screening starts at 7PM and will take place at the Logan
Center for the Arts on the University
of Chicago campus located at 915 E.
60th St.
Filmmaker, multimedia artist and Arfofuturist Cauleen Smith, who among her numerous
films and art works is the 1988 feature film Drylongso and who was also the recipient of the National Alliance for Media Arts and
Culture Outstanding Artist Award last year, will be the host, and will conduct a Q and A with Clark after the screening.
