Bo knows music. The PG county native is pioneering his own hip hop/jazz/electronica style and forging his way through the industry, by his own rules. We talked with Bo about his past, his grind, and all the things to come.
Can you tell me a little bit about your background?-Where you’re from, where you went to school?
I’m from Prince George’s County Maryland, Largo to be exact. I went to school at St John’s University in Queens. I wanted to get away and go to New York to expand my mind, and I guess you could say “find myself.”
How did you get into producing music?
I played instruments since I was literally 4 years old. I played some of every instrument, but my true love came out in high school playing the trumpet. Then I wanted to branch out into different sounds and thats when i started getting into the electronic side and production side of things.
Describe your sound?
I’d say it’s a new Hip-hop/ Jazz for real though. smooth feeling and soul, all you would want outta jazz, but at the same time give you that lil’ bounce that you would want out of hip hop and electronic music.
What is Genius Right?
Genius Right is a creative hub of all my work. I started that in late 2012 just to centralize my work and give a place where I could get everything out there. Social connections social media, and have that experience online.
How do you get your music out there?
Being out in the events in your city, you know? You gotta be out in the street, you gotta connect with people. Stay relevant, without the sole thought of making money, but just getting your stuff out there. It’s difficult man, trying to meet people and build relationships with them.
You went to South by Southwest, what did you do there?
I went down there with a media group I work with called International AWOL. Basically I wanted to be in the right place to network. That’s pretty much where you need to be as an artist to grow and meet people. It’s a great place to go if you’re in this kinda work. There’s all sorts of people looking for the same things as me.
What are your goals for the rest of 2014?
I’m hoping to put out a sound project with some instrumentals and samples and the different stuff I do as a sound artist hoping to reach people. I want to put out some electronic dance music at the end of the year.
What’s the hardest thing about being an up and coming producer?
It is hard to distinguish what you are as an artist and what route you’ll go to reach the people. The hardest thing is knowing exactly what your art form is, and try to get your work out. Not always through artists, but how are you going to reach regular people to listen to you, you know?
Any advice for a young producer?
You gotta love it man. It really goes in phases, you can have a lot of breakthroughs one year, maybe not, But you gotta keep working on your craft.
Bo is coming, and his talent will speak for itself. But don’t just take our word for it. Check him out and follow his journey!
