Black Excellence showed up and showed out once again during the 2018 Met Gala as stars took on the costume fundraising event's theme, "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination."

One beacon of black girl magic, Letitia Wright, shined on the press carpet in a Coach dress. Wright's stylist Ade Samuel spoke on the inspiration behind the look on Monday.

“Letitia is a very religious person, so we wanted to stay true to who she is while also having fun with fashion,” Samuel told Page Six. “She decided she wanted to do an Ethiopian interpretation of Christianity. If you look closely at her dress, you’ll see the golden cloth and embroidery that was inspired by Ethiopian pastors’ clothing. We even decided to go with a traditional Ethiopian hairstyle, to keep the African theme going!”

“We had a team of five girls hand-beading and hand-stitching every bit of it,” Samuel said. The dress took about six months to make, from start to finish.

Samuel also noted that the actress chose Forevermark diamonds to enhance the dress's gold tones, adding a layer to her royal aura. “She’s a Wakandan princess, after all!” Samuel said, referencing Wright's breakout Black Panther character, Shuri.
