While most artists might feel deterred by receiving a million dislikes on a YouTube music video, Lil Nas X believes even the negativity should be celebrated.

For the very first time, the 22-year-old rapper, whose real name is Montero Lamar Hill, reached one million dislikes on his controversial video “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” and he publicly thanked those who contributed to a first in his music career.

The “Old Town Road” artist was alerted to the unconventional milestone when a Twitter user congratulated him and said “Montero…has now surpassed 1M dislikes"

"It becomes his first video on YouTube to reach this milestone. Congrats," the user continued.

The rapper gave a characteristically comical response.

“Thank u to everyone who made this possible. I am nothing without you guys lack of support," he wrote.

The video, which has also garnered more than eight million likes, was heavily criticized by conservatives and homophobes earlier this year.

In the video, Lil Nas X can be seen riding on a stripper pole to Hell, giving the Devil a lap dance and showing close ups of “Satan shoes,” which were customized versions of the Nike Air Max 97.

Many parents, Christians and conservative politicians said the song was inappropriate and encouraged devil worshiping, The Guardian reported.

The rapper said he created the song to embrace his sexuality and to let other members of the LGBTQ+ community feel safe.

While addressing his younger self, he said “I know we promised to never be ‘that’ type of gay person, I know we promised to die with the secret, but this will open doors for many other queer people to simply exist.”

"You see this is very scary for me, people will be angry, they will say I’m pushing an agenda," he continued. "But the truth is, I am. The agenda to make people stay the f**k out of other people’s lives and stop dictating who they should be.”

Lil Nas X was unbothered by the criticism then, and remains unbothered now.

The rapper has continued to make controversial music videos including his latest release “Industry Baby,” where he dances provocatively while nude, as Blavity previously reported.

The video is a mockery of his legal case with Nike over the "Satan shoes" and shows the artist playing prosecutor, jury and judge. He is eventually found guilty and sentenced to five years in Montero State Prison for being gay but later escapes.

Art once again imitates life because Lil Nas X clearly can't be held down.
