Lil Nas X has been open about his sexuality in recent months, and on Tuesday, he recounted a special moment with his family that he said felt like a “release.”

The “Panini” rapper took to Twitter to tell his fans about the transformative moment he took his family to a gay bar for the first time.

“Last weekend i brought my family to a gay club for the first time and it felt like a release off my 13 year old self’s shoulders. it’s one thing for your family to know you’re gay but it’s a whole nother thing for them to acknowledge it and truly try to unlearn the hatred for it,” he wrote.

Fans were quick to show their support in the replies.

“I’m so happy for you, man. I don’t know you and you don’t know me, but watching you grow and succeed and live like this is a wondrous marvel. I hope you’ll have a long and happy life filled with healing moments like this,” one of his fans wrote.

“Omgg I’m so glad they are learning and support you! You deserve it king!” another added.

Some even shared their own stories of family and self-acceptance.

“It was amazing to have my mom take me and my trans friend to the club, two hours from our little rural town, just so we could feel ‘normal’ It did suck a little that she looked hotter than me, though,” one user replied.

“My mom told me I should be “celibate for the sake of my soul” when I came out. A year later I dragged her along to a gay club. A year after that, *she* came out and has been with her wife for 20+ years. Gay clubs are church for queers,” another wrote.

One of the rapper’s brothers, Labrock Anderson, dropped his thoughts on the experience, suggesting he’s down to make it a regular thing.

“Crazy part is I enjoyed the gay club more than the straight one Lmfaoooo,” he tweeted.

Lil Nas X’s family’s comfort with his sexuality has been a long time coming. According to Queerty, the rapper has been vocal about his complicated relationship with his family in the past, particularly with his mother, who has experienced addiction. Though his relationship with his father is in a better place, he’s spoken out about the fear he felt coming out to him.

The rapper has also been more vocal and candid about his experiences as a gay Black man. As Blavity previously reported, he called out BET for not recognizing his music at this year’s BET Awards, stating the snub says a lot about homophobia in the Black community.

“thank you bet awards. an outstanding zero nominations again. black excellence!” Lil Nas X wrote in a since-deleted tweet.

“This is about the bigger problem of homophobia in the Black community… y’all can sit and pretend all u want, but imma risk it all for us,” he tweeted.

He’s expressing his frustration with BET through new music, too. The rapper took to social media to give viewers a preview of a diss track aimed at the network. In a video posted across platforms, the 23-year-old is seen shirtless repeating “f**k BET, f**k BET.”
