Sitting down with Brandon Marshall, Chad Johnson and and former WNBA player Chantel Tremitiere on the latest episode of I AM ATHLETE, WNBA legend Lisa Leslie said women’s basketball players have been instructed to not make a big deal about Brittney Griner‘s arrest in Russia.

“What we were told was to not make a big fuss about it so they could not use her as a pawn, so to speak, in this situation in the war,” Leslie said on the podcast. “So to make it like it’s not that important, or don’t make it like ‘Free Brittney’ and we start this campaign and it becomes something they can use.”

The former Los Angeles Sparks superstar, however, didn’t reveal where the information came from.

“I don’t want to say who said that, but it’s been kind of spreading through the women’s basketball world,” she said.

As Blavity previously reported, Griner was detained at an airport in Russia on Feb. 17 for allegedly being in possession of the THC-laden drug hash oil. Leslie said Griner’s supporters now face a dilemma as they try to decide whether or not they should be more vocal about the situation.

“Do we know if that’s the right thing to do or not? It’s heartbreaking for all of us,” she said. “You want to do more. Should we all use our social media platforms and get behind it or not? This is the first time we’re in a situation we don’t know what to do.”

Still, Griner’s friends and family haven’t stopped thinking about her.

“We talk about it daily,” Leslie said. “We’re like ‘What’s she doing now? You think they cut off her hair? You think she got a bed long enough for her to fit in?’ We’ve had full-on conversations about it. I’m like ‘Her parents gotta be sick.’ Yes, it’s thought about and talked about a lot. The questions is ‘What’s the right thing to do about it?'”

As Blavity previously reported, Griner’s detention has been extended until May. The 31-year-old, who entered a not guilty plea in a Russian court, could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
