A Twitter user recently called out Jones College Prep High School to bring attention to a student’s troubling Halloween costume and the principal’s questionable response.
The matter was spotlighted on Thursday evening after a user going by @tmg__alex kicked off a lengthy Twitter thread that gave a run-down of the situation.
“I don’t use Twitter often, but I’d like to use this thread to bring to light a situation that occurred at Jones College Prep in Chicago this past week, where a student wore a Nazi outfit to school,” the thread began.
The user proceeded to call out a student with an alleged “history of racist, sexist, and now antisemitic behavior” for wearing what appears to be a Nazi costume to the institution; however, the student allegedly told school administration that his costume was based on a “Berlin Wall patrol guard.”
on halloween, monday october 31st, david arrived to school wearing a costume reminiscent of a nazi uniform, telling other students he was “a german soldier from the 1940s” while later telling admin he was a “berlin wall patrol guard” pic.twitter.com/vX3DhkG8Uz

Notably, the situation escalated even further after it was revealed that the school principal, Dr. Joseph Powers, didn’t take issue with the matter.
In fact, Powers allegedly gave the student a platform to show his costume off to the campus community while performing the “Nazi goosewalk” and salute, and the principal proceeded to even defend the offensive costume in a letter to parents.
“We take the well-being of all students seriously and do not tolerate hateful expressions of any kind. In this situation, it certainly appears this was not the intent of the Halloween costume,” Powers wrote in the statement.
We should add that he didn’t appear to elaborate on his reasoning in this letter, though he appeared to only view the costume as a “military surplus army uniform.”
later an email was sent out to parents by dr joseph powers, the principal, stating that he didn’t find the costume offensive, and the email neglected to comment on the anti semitic actions performed in the video. since this event people have taken their outrage to social media. pic.twitter.com/LUFrthZW75

The user behind the thread went on to say that, despite widespread social media outrage, Jones College Prep High School has allegedly failed to “do anything substantial” regarding the student’s costume.
administration has yet to do anything substantial to give Luna consequences for his actions. many of the students and staff including myself are extremely outraged by the handling of this bigoted behavior, and demand more be done to bring justice to the jewish community cps wide.

They also urged others to spread word of the “antisemitic activity at Jones College Prep” before sharing some more information about the student behind the troubling get-up.
also in terms of david’s behavior after the incident, he put his hands on another student after they tried to confront him on the nature of his costume, saying “i don’t have time to talk about this”

People following the matter also got a couple of updates after the initial thread wrapped up, with one being centered on an email Powers allegedly sent school staff members.
“One of our students wore an East German (communist era) border guard uniform probably from the 1980s, before the reunification of Germany in 1990. I saw guards on the other side of the wall dressed this way when I visited West Berlin in the 1980s,” he wrote in the leaked statement.
Powers also denied that the costume had to do with Nazism, writing, “I tried to explain the context and time period of the uniform to the students who spoke with me, but apparently the student who wore the uniform may have told people it was from the 1940s.”
In a second update, Dr. Therese Plunkett — the institution’s assistant principal — sent an email on Powers’s behalf, which seemingly served as some late damage control.
It’s unclear how exactly the situation will be handled moving forward, though administrators’ goal is to “make sure that all students and staff feel safe, heard, and supported.”
