Cori Broadus, the daughter of Snoop Dogg, opened up about her mental health struggles on Sunday when she shared her story on Instagram.
“The last few weeks my mental has not been so great,” the 21-year-old wrote. “At one point I tried to end my life but you & my family really give me a purpose to live & helped me realize life is much more than materialistic things & you gotta just keep pushing through the bulls**t. THANK YOU… #mentalhealthawareness.”
According to Complex, the young woman was specifically referring to her boyfriend, Wayne Deuce, when she expressed gratitude in her post. Deuce, who is seen in the Instagram pictures, also shared the same photos on his own account.
“I love you Princess," he wrote on a chalkboard seen in the background of one of the images. "This time is about us getting our minds right for a better and healthier lifestyle. We riding til the end.”
Mental Health America, an organization that started the monthly observation of mental health in May 1949, has been conducting research to highlight the issue. According to the group, one in every five American adults will have a diagnosable mental health condition in any given year.
The organization also examined the pandemic's effect on mental health. According to the data, more than eight in 10 people experienced moderate to severe symptoms of depression consistently since the start of the pandemic.
As part of this year's Mental Health Awareness Month, MHA is leading a campaign titled "You Are Not Alone." The goal is to destigmatize mental illness and help survivors understand that they're not alone.
Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, according to Suicide Awareness Voices Of Education. The data adds that approximately 130 Americans die by suicide every day.
