There have been a few previous posts here on S&A about my film series Little Brother, but I wanted to make a personal appeal for the next leg of our journey, as we look to produce our third film in the 10-year series.

Little Brother is a long-term documentary project centered on the emotional lives of black boys.

A few years ago, filmmaker Nicole Franklin and I set out to start a series that would cast young black males in a different light from the violent or delinquent images we often see in media. Each year, we go to a new city to talk with African American boys between the ages of 9 and 13, discussing questions they rarely get asked – how they feel, what they care about, and how they express love for those around them. The idea is simple – that as audiences see more of black youth in their humanity, we’ll begin to judge them differently.

With the help of our consultant, psychologist and author Dr. Raymond Winbush, we’ve interviewed little brothers in Camden, New Jersey, and Chicago, Illinois. The series has screened in several cities to positive response, with the first chapter currently airing on Documentary Channel. We’re now gearing up for a third film with young men in the state of Florida. But we can only get there with your help.

The films are short, each running about 15 minutes, and to help cover production costs we’ve set a fundraising goal of $3,500, which we have just under a month to raise. Any funds raised beyond our goal will help cover distribution, community engagement initiatives, and future chapters of the series.
