Hot on the heels of her successful Saturday Night Live stint, Lizzo remains the name on everybody’s lips. The pop superstar born Melissa Viviane Jefferson seems to be everywhere these days. But as ubiquitous as she is, there are still some things some people don’t know about here.
Lizzo has been a part of two girl groups
Before her success as a solo artist, Lizzo was a part of two different girl groups, according to Biography.com. She joined her first group when she was 12 years old. She said while a member of the Cornrow Clique she developed her “Lizzo” persona.
Her father's death led her on a journey to self-love
When Lizzo was 21, her father passed away. She told Teen Vogue that his passing was the lowest point in her life but that it ultimately inspired her journey to self-love.
JAY-Z inspired her stage name
Lizzo told The Cut, that JAY-Z’s track “H to the Izzo” inspired her stage name which is also a play on her name.
She's a Prince protegée
In 2010, Lizzo was a mentee to the late Prince.
According to Okay Player, Prince offered to produce an album for her before he passed away.
“I used to be so upset that I never had co-signs,” she said to Rolling Stone. “I was like, ‘I’m too weird for the rappers and too black for the indies.’ I was just sitting in this league of my own. To be embraced by Prince and co-signed, I am eternally grateful for that.”
For a period of time, Lizzo experienced homelessness
At the age of 24, Lizzo experienced homelessness. She told NPR that she still considered herself lucky during the time.
“I think that I had a luxury and a privilege to be able to sleep on the floor of my drummer’s house, to be able to sleep in a car my sister gave me, to be able to sleep at the studio where my rock band performed, to be able to sneak into 24 Hour Fitness and use the showers there,” she said.
She identifies as sexually fluid
“When it comes to sexuality or gender, I personally don’t ascribe to just one thing. I cannot sit here right now and tell you I’m just one thing. That’s why the colors for LGBTQ+ are a rainbow! Because there’s a spectrum and right now we try to keep it black and white. That’s just not working for me,” she told Teen Vogue.
