Lizzo is giving back to her college community. The artist has partnered with her alma mater, The University of Houston, to offer a brand new scholarship to one Black student studying music.

“We are excited to be working with Lizzo and her team to establish the Sasha Be Flooting Music Scholarship within the UH Alumni Association Foundation,” the university said in a statement. “We are deeply grateful to Lizzo for her generosity and commitment to supporting the next generation of music students. This scholarship will be life-changing for one young artist — it will create opportunities and open doors that will impact the student and their journey toward a music career.”

The scholarship is the fourth donation Lizzo has made as part of her Fourth Annual Juneteenth Giveback. She donated $50,000 to the Marsha P. Johnson Institute, Black Girls Smile and the Sphinx Organization.

“Today is very close to my heart, near and dear to home and a milestone for me,” Lizzo said in an announcement video posted on social media. “It is for any young Black student from Houston, Texas, who has applied to go to the University of Houston to study at the Moores School of Music,” she added. “That was me just a couple of years ago, a young Black flute player who just needed a scholarship and someone to believe in them. Now I get to pay it forward.”

Lizzo shared a throwback photograph of herself for the occasion. We can see a younger Lizzo playing the flute in the University of Houston band with a temporary tattoo of the school’s mascot on her cheek.

“Meet Baby Lizzo on scholarship at the University of Houston, hoping she’ll earn a music performance degree in flute,” she captioned the post. “Little did she know she’d change the conversation on flutes in pop culture forever.”
