FilmDistrict will release Spike Lee’s Oldboy adaptation, which stars Josh Brolin, along with Sharlto Copley, Elizabeth Olsen, Samuel L. Jackson, and others, wide, on October 11, 2013.

Here’s a look at the first poster (more like a teaser) of the upcoming drama/thriller courtesy of Collider, who snapped a photo of it at the CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas (it’s an annual affair for theater owners).

The 20-count on it represents the 20 years that Josh Brolin’s character, Joe Doucett, spends in captivity.

In Park Chan-wook’s reverred 2003 adaptation of the manga, the lead, Oh Dae-su (played by Choi Min-sik), spends 15 years in captivity. 

And in the original Japanese manga series (written by Garon Tsuchiya and illustrated by Nobuaki Minegishi) that both films are based on, the protagonist, Shinichi Gotō, spends 10 years in solitary confinement. 

Spike Lee is directing from a script penned by Mark Protosevich, who is also co-producing, along with Roy Lee, Doug Davison and Nathan Kahane of Good Universe.

October might seem like a long time from now, but it really isn’t, given how quickly the months just seem to be passing by. Summer is right around the corner. 

Although I’m wondering if the film might actually premiere at some international film festival before then. I think Cannes is out of the question, given that the film entered the post-production phase in December (Cannes is next month, and the festival will be announcing its lineup this week). 

It’ll be a perfect fit for Toronto. A TIFF premiere in September, create some buzz, build anticipation (assuming it’s a film that’s good enough to generate positive buzz, as well as fanboy/girl excitement), and then it opens in USA theaters a couple of weeks later.

We’ll see.
