Allison Janney and Jurnee Smollett are taking the action genre by the reins in Lou. The film comes to Netflix on Sept. 23.
Directed by Anna Foerster, Lou stars Janney as the titular character, a woman who thought she had been able to retire her hardcore life. But Smollett’s character brings her back into the fray.
According to the official description:
Thinking she’d put her dangerous past behind her, Lou (Allison Janney) finds her quiet life interrupted when a desperate mother (Jurnee Smollett) begs her to save her kidnapped daughter. As a massive storm rages, the two women risk their lives on a rescue mission that will test their limits and expose dark and shocking secrets from their pasts.
The film also stars Logan Marshall-Green, Ridley Asha Bateman and Matt Craven.
The screenplay comes from Maggie Cohn and Jack Stanley from a story by Cohn. J.J. Abrams produces via Bad Robot along with Hannah Minghella and Jon Cohen. Smollett and Janney also executive produce with Cory Bennett Lewis, Lindsey Weber, Brendan Ferguson and Braden Aftergood.

Smollett currently stars in another Netflix film, 'Spiderhead,' starring Chris Hemsworth and Miles Teller.
In that film, Smollett and Teller’s characters make a connection in a technologically and medically-experimental penitentiary aimed at using its prisoners for scientific tests in exchange for commuted sentences. Hemsworth plays the penitentiary’s creator, who wants to change humanity through his experiments.
