Based on the real-life love story of Richard and Mildred Loving, Loving will premiere in the U.S. on November 4th. The film debuted at Cannes Monday and is already stirring Oscar buzz.
Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga star as the Virginia couple who danced a very dangerous line at a time when interracial dating and marriage were outlawed. In 1958, they went to Washington D.C. to get married but when they returned to Virginia they were arrested and put in jail for violating the state’s Racial Integrity Act. The couple agreed to leave the state in order to avoid more jail time.
Despite the law, the Lovings yearned to return home to Virginia. Their struggle to do so lead to the landmark Supreme Court Case, Loving vs. Virginia (1967), where the high court declared Virginia’s anti-miscegenation statute unconstitutional. Their story became the focus of a 2011 documentary, The Loving Story.
An official trailer has yet to be released. Edgerton said at the Cannes press conference, “One of the things that struck me while working on this film is, what happens between two individuals is nobody else’s business.”
It looks like true love really wins over all.
