Malia Obama has been living her best life since graduating high school at the prestigious Sidwell Friends School in June, choosing to defer her admission to Harvard University for a year, and finally turning 18 in July. Summer Sixteen has been good to Barack and Michelle Obama’s first born: Music festivals, a trip to Barcelona, and helping Beyoncé celebrate her birthday are just a few highlights of her summer. Malia’s budding adulthood has opened up a world of possibilities for the progeny of POTUS. One of her aspirations seems to be joining the ranks of the Clapback Queens.

Earlier this summer, Malia was at the center of some unnecessary controversy after being filmed smoking something that looked a lot like a joint at this year’s Lollapalooza. A recent high school graduate who has already been admitted to one of the best universities in the country smoking anything, especially a drug that many believe should be decriminalized anyway, shouldn’t be news to anyone. And Malia Obama knows it.

Malia showed up to Made in America festival in Philly over the weekend to party it up with her sister (and personally wish Beyoncé a happy birthday, no big deal). She did it all in t-shirt that read “Smoking Kills.” If there was any question as to whether or not Malia is bothered by her critics, this coy response put it to rest.

Not only did she become the newest initiate into #PettyGang (and we welcome her with open arms) with this move, Malia Obama is making a strong statement about her fresh independence. After spending most of her life under the very public eye, she is demanding some autonomy and respect. And she deserves it.
