If you were anywhere near fireworks on Thursday, you might have heard the famous phrase “back it up, Terry!”
If you don’t get the reference, watch this amusing video.
In the 2017 clip, Terry Davis lit a firecracker with an unidentified man. When sparks began to fly, Davis, who was sitting in an electric wheelchair, did not move. His cousin, Draco Wooten, hilariously urged him to back away.
“Back up Terry! Put it in reverse, Terry,” Wooten yelled.
The video went viral and two years later, people are still laughing.
“I think I got posted and tagged in 200 posts just today,” Wooten told Local Memphis on Thursday.
Davis shared he didn’t move because his wheelchair was malfunctioning.
“When I lit it, I couldn’t move at all,” said Davis. “My chair went off on its own and I didn’t know.”
Unfortunately, Davis’ chair eventually gave out. A new one will cost about $28K. His family created a GoFundMe account to help with the costs. According to the page, Davis never profited from his viral fame.
“This video has been seen over 20 million times and merchandising of t-shirts etc, but Terry has never received a penny of the proceeds,” the family wrote.
“The reason he couldn't back up was because his wheelchair didn't work, and even the 'new' secondhand one he now has doesn't work well.”
As of Friday morning, the fund has raised over $1,300 of its $5000 goal.
A broken wheelchair didn’t keep Davis away from the festivities.
“I will be back out there this year,” Davis declared.
