A wedding is already an emotional event, but one groom decided to take it to the next level and ask his fiancee’s daughters if he could adopt them during a wedding ceremony in Detroit, Fox News reports.

According to Fox News, just minutes before Dontez Williams exchanged vows with bride Myshella Burton, Williams surprised guests by asking his soon-to-be stepdaughters, then 9-year-old Abigail and 8-year-old Natalie, if he could adopt them.

“You really become a man when you have children,” he said in a video, People tweeted. “Having someone to teach, protect, provide for them, discipline them, learn from them and grow from them. For all of these reasons, you’ve helped me become a better version of me.”

“I’ll never forget the way Abigail looked at me. It was priceless,” Williams told Fox News. “It really meant a lot to me seeing her face light up.”

“I know that I’m a father figure to you both. A young, quality dad,” he continued in a video that went viral on social media.

He then popped the question on bended knee.

“But I want to make it official and ask, can I adopt you?”

The tears were overflowing, even more so after Abigail and Natalie accepted and bent down to hug their new dad.

Williams, Abigail and Natalie weren’t the only emotional ones. Several groomsmen who made a cameo in the video are seen wiping away tears.

“Just the thought of me writing the vows for them, it made me want to tear up,” Williams told Fox News. “When I felt that emotion just thinking about it, I was like, ‘I got to do this. This is the right decision. There’s no ifs, ands or buts about it.'”

Of Myshella’s reaction to the unexpected proposal, Williams told Fox News she was surprised.

“Myshella was really shocked, but she was happy and just thankful for me stepping up,” he said. “She was really happy that I feel that way for them and said she’s grateful to have me in their lives.”

His love and commitment to his new daughters radiates throughout the video, which has now garnered over 9,000 likes between the two posts Williams shared on his Instagram.

“Although they are not biologically mine, blood could not make us any closer. I wanted to make it official in becoming their dad as I wrote vows not only to my wife but to my daughters as well asking them could I adopt them,” he said on Instagram.

In the six months since the family made their union official, Williams has shared several moments that suggest they’re thriving. Back in December, he shared a few videos of their first Christmas post wedding, including a snap of a doormat with “The Williams Family” written on it. On Valentine’s Day, the newlyweds jetted off to Mexico to celebrate their first day of love as a married couple.

“Let’s get together, and be in love,” he captioned a post of their vacation. “That’s Romance…”
