New content from Mara Brock Akil is on the way!
Deadline announced that the screenwriter and showrunner has inked a premium blind script deal with Fox Entertainment. Under this deal, Akil will write and develop a scripted series to be produced by Fox Entertainment. She and husband Salim Akil previously had an overall deal with Warner Bros. Television.
Akil is no stranger to creating scripted content, much less beloved classics. She is the creator of the long-running UPN series Girlfriends, The Game and the BET drama series Being Mary Jane. Akil is also the producer of the CW superhero series Black Lightning, which came out of her WBTV deal along with Love Is ___.
In December 2019 it was also announced that a second revival of The Game is in development at the CW. Akil will return as the writer and executive producer, while American Soul creator Devon Greggory will serve as the showrunner.
“Mara is a truly gifted writer, with a strong point of view. From Girlfriends to The Game to Being Mary Jane, she’s a proven hitmaker with the unique ability to write both comedy and drama,” Michael Thorn, president of Entertainment at FOX Entertainment, said in a statement. “Since the formation of Fox Entertainment, we’ve said we want to be in business with the best and the brightest, and no one exemplifies that more than Mara Brock Akil.”
