Marvel’s Blade starring Mahershala Ali has found its next director.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Yann Demange, who directed the pilot of Lovecraft Country, has signed on to direct the upcoming film. Joining Demange is Michael Starrbury, who wrote an Emmy-nominated episode of Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us. Starrbury will write the new script for the film, replacing Stacy Osei-Kuffour, who was originally billed to write the script.

According to Marvel’s official statement released in September, Tariq left the project because of “continued shifts in our production schedule.” But, Marvel stated, Tariq “will remain an executive producer on the film.”
"We appreciate Bassam's talent and all the work he's done getting Blade to where it is," Marvel said at the time.
While neither Tariq or Marvel have spoken at length about the departure, it’s believed that creative differences led to Tariq leaving the project.
The sudden switch-up of course derailed the projected time for the film to begin production in Atlanta this November. Ali, who has been heavily involved in the film as well as set to star as the titular character, is said to have been behind selecting the film's new writer.
With a new director and writer in line, the film is now looking to start filming next year in Atlanta. The film’s theatrical release date is still set for Sept. 6, 2024.
Along with Ali, Blade is also set to star Delroy Lindo and Aaron Pierre.
