California Rep. Maxine Waters called out CBS News for not including a Black reporter on its 2020 election coverage team.

According to Newsweek, the seasoned congresswoman met with CBS officials to discuss diversity Tuesday in the aftermath of a social media firestorm.

CBS News felt the wrath over the weekend after a news producer announced the 12-person team set to cover the upcoming 2020 presidential election. Twitter users noticed there were no Black reporters despite the crucial role Black voters and a slew of Black candidates will play in 2020.

Waters, along with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), were some of the most vocal critics online demanding the news network improve its diversity efforts. Despite there being several people of color, the lack of any Black reporters was a glaring issue. Conservatives pushed back claiming Black people weren't interested in journalism. These false accusations sparked another wave of criticism from Black journalists.

"CBS, the efforts on your website about your support for diversity fly in the face of your display of all of the reporters you've selected for the 2020 campaign," Waters wrote Monday. "Not one Black. What's up with this? An explanation is needed."

The NAACP also released a statement reiterating the importance of Black reporters. NBC News reports the statement slammed the network for "undervaluing" the Black voting bloc. Black voters were primarily responsible for Doug Jones' victory against Roy Moore in the Alabama special senatorial race. Black voters and candidates also helped propel the "blue wave" of the 2018 midterms.

"As the voting bloc that will most certainly determine the direction of this country in the upcoming election, it is vital any and all media outlets have a diverse newsroom, including individuals of color in decision making positions to speak to and address the issues and concerns directly impacting the Black community," the statement read. "Representation matters and the media needs our coverage on the issues to drive the discussion."

CBS News heeded Waters and others' call to action. She met with officials a day after posting her initial tweet. By all accounts, the network has promised to include Black reporters following their meeting with Waters.
