
Love hip-hop? Love justice? The 4th of July may be over but Maysles Cinema’s Summer of Music keeps the spirit alive with a special outdoor free screening of Roger Paradiso’s I Want My Name Back – the story of how founding members of the legendary Sugarhill Gang waged a 30+-year battle to rightfully own their hip-hop legacy – along with a special, live performance by some of the biggest legends in the game. The event will be held at Marcus Garvey Park, Lawn A (Mount Morris Park West between 122nd and 124th Streets)and is the kick off to Maysles Cinema’s annual “Summer of Music” free, outdoor, music and film series, taking place throughout Harlem’s parks.Rain location: The Mount Morris Ascension Presbyterian Church,

The evening will kick off at 5:30pm with DJ Tedsmooth’s Old School Jam (with surprise guests and dance contests!). Tedsmooth has been a staple of the NY club scene for many years. Known as the “Remix King,” his creative mixes have taken many a pop and hip-hop hit to the next level. Bring a blanket, stretch out on the lawn, and/or shake a tail feather, and listen to DJ Tedsmooth spin some of summer time’s greatest jams.
The highlight of the evening will be a LIVE PERFORMANCE of “Rapper’s Delight” Featuring Legendary MCs Wonder Mike, Master Gee and Grandmaster Caz (of the The Cold Crush Brothers and the real writer of the verse Big Hank put down on wax) starting at 7:30pm. This unprecedented, reunion performance of hip-hop’s very first Top 40 hit will also feature Melle Mel (Grandmaster Flash), Dana Dane, DJ Wiz (Kid N’ Play) and Grandmaster Dee (Whodini), Keith LeBlanc, Vernon Reid and Doug Winbish (Living Colour). For those who are feelin’ the hip hip hop ’til you don’t stop, there will be a “Rapper’s Delight” audience rendition contest judged by the originators themselves. Following the live performance will be Roger Paradiso’s I Want My Name Back, Starting promptly at 8:30pm.
