Cedrick “Swab” Cotton of 1990’s R&B group Ideal was stabbed to death last week.

According to ABC13, the 46-year-old suffered from a fatal stab wound after being attacked on Feb. 9 in broad daylight during his trip from the local food mart in Houston.

Fondren Food Mart was a place where Cotton went often to pick up groceries. His mother Delores Floyd even told ABC13 news of his routine. “He'd ride his little bike, go there, get a quick cigarette. The next thing I know, I get this call and I heard people … 'He comes here every day. He doesn't bother anybody. He's a good guy,'" Floyd said.

According to Heavy, a press release that named neither Cotton nor the suspect disclosed that the victim and a male party entered a confrontation inside and outside of Fondren Food Mart. The confrontation escalated and resulted in the stabbing. When paramedics arrived, Cotton was dead and the suspect fled. The suspect is said to be a Black male in his mid-late 20’s.

"Whoever did this, turn yourself in,” Floyd pleaded to the unknown suspect responsible for the death of her son. “You know, it's time out for this foolishness. Killing people is not the right thing to do.”

Cotton, whose stage name was “Swab,” was a member of the R&B group Ideal. The group, best known for their Billboard chart hitting songs “Creep Inn,” “Get Gone,” and “Whatever,” hit their peak in 1999. The group was composed of Cotton, his brother Maverick “Mav” Cotton, their cousin Wayne “PZ” Perry and friend Jay “J-Dante” Green. All members of the group were graduates of Lamar High School in Houston, Texas.

Ideal’s first single, “Inner City Blues,” premiered on the 1996 soundtrack of the crime drama, Original Gangstas. Their self-titled debut album hit the shelves in 1999 via Virgin Records and in 2004, a follow-up album was announced but never completed. The group took to their official Instagram account to announce the loss of their group member.

Other members of the R&B community including producer Bryan-Michael Cox and singer RL of the R&B group Next used their social media platforms to mourn their late colleague.

Houston police are still actively in search of the suspect responsible for the death of the late R&B singer. If you or anyone you know may have information about the case, contact the HPD Homicide Division at (713) 308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at (713) 222-TIPS. Moreover, an official GoFundMe page has been launched to assist Cotton’s family with funeral expenses.
