As Miami Beach grapples with a series of fatal shootings in recent days, Mayor Dan Gelber is telling people to cancel any spring break plans they may have in the city.
“For two consecutive nights, Ocean Drive has been the scene of deadly shootings. … As is the case with most serious crime in our city, both shootings were between visitors to Miami Beach and did not involve residents,” Gelber said in a video message according to Complex.
On Sunday, the city enforced a curfew of 11:59 p.m., which is expected to last through 6 a.m. Monday. More curfew restrictions are expected to be implemented from March 23- 27.
In its press release on Sunday, the city noted two recent shootings as well as “excessively large and unruly crowds” that have prompted officials to take strict measures. Local leaders have also declared a State of Emergency.
The mayor said more than 70 guns have been impounded by law enforcement in recent weeks.
“We don’t ask for spring break in our city,” he said. “We don’t want spring break in our city.”
