Backed by Universal Music Group’s Astralwerks, where he recently scored his first major label deal, blossoming producer and artist Michaël Brun has debuted his new single entitled “Charge It,” which features Masego, Jozzy and Bayka.
DMV-bred Masego, Grammy Award-winning R&B singer-songwriter Jozzy, and burgeoning Jamaican artist Bayka all joined forces with Brun to cultivate an infectious, energy-driven dance track. The hypnotic smash hit illuminates Brun’s unique ability to bend genre and to craft a catchy tune of international appeal.
Brun exclusively told Blavity, “This new body of work is really inspired by my heritage and my upbringing. I grew up in Haiti, but I’m also Guyanese. I was pre-med in school but also made music on my off time, and I lived in both Haiti and the states for parts of my life. I experienced so many fusions without even realizing it. So, I really wanted all of those details and all of the feelings of things merging to really be present in the music and the visuals. With ‘Charge It,’ I was a big fan of what Masego, Jozzy and Bayka have each done in their careers and thought they complemented each other in a really special way. We touch down in Jamaica with some of the flows and sounds, but also incorporate elements of Coupé-décalé and jazz. I’m super hyped to be able to finally share the song.”
Eliciting the robust and flavorful energy that has become synonymous with Brun and his sound, the riveting music video for “Charge It” was shot in Jamaica and directed by Savannah Baker, who is the mastermind behind visuals for Usher, Sean Paul, Katy Perry, Mariah Carey and more. In addition to its stunning optics, the video features British-Jamaican TikTok sensations T&A Twinz, who have amassed over 2.5 million likes on the platform.
Over the course of his career, Brun has produced multiple multiplatinum records, a complete menagerie of No. 1 hits, won Grammys, and played Coachella at 20 years old, but now his focus is fixated on changing the world.
This summer, Brun will return with his annual Bayo Block Party Tour. Traditionally being held at popular, historic venues across the globe and tactfully embracing classic elements such as “rara” and indulging the impromptu spirit of a Port-au-Prince street party, this year’s iteration will include shows at Montreal Jazz Fest on July 7 and Central Park SummerStage on July 22.
