Michael Jordan has opened a medical clinic in Charlotte which will serve underprivileged community members who have little or no health insurance.

The basketball icon and current owner of the Charlotte Hornets held a grand opening Thursday to unveil the Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic reports The Charlotte Observer.

"I stand here before you as a proud parent, son, member of this community," Jordan said at the grand opening. "My mother, my brothers, my daughter, my grandson, we all represent the name Michael Jordan. You see my name, but yet you see a lot of people behind me, and the commitment and being a part of a community that matters."

The clinic will provide healthcare services as well as access to social workers, behavioral health experts, oral health practitioners and physical therapy.

With tears rolling down his face, Jordan said it's about giving to a community that has supported him through the years.

"When I was playing basketball to now where I'm a part of this community," Jordan said. "I think the partnership goes a long way in providing needs to this community, here, less than fortunate people."

The former Chicago Bulls player also expects to open a second healthcare facility, which amounts to a $7.2 million donation for the two clinics, The Charlotte Observer reported.

"The money doesn't matter, the name really doesn't matter," Jordan said. "It's the commitment that I've partnered up with unbelievable partners, to see a need for this community based on the stats that I'm pretty sure you guys have heard and read about."

According to NBA.com, Jordan has a long list of philanthropic efforts. In 2018, the six-time NBA champion donated $2 million to Hurricane Florence relief.

The basketball Hall of Famer has also donated $1 million each to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

Jordan's Celebrity Invitational golf tournament has raised more than $7 million for various organizations.

"We have to continue this process," Jordan said at the grand opening. "This is just the start of a battle, of being able to touch as many as we can."
