Officers of the St. Clair Shores Police Department have been cleared in the shooting death of a Detroit man, Theoddeus Gray, as he attended a baby shower earlier this month.

In a Wednesday press conference, Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham concluded the officers involved were justified in their actions, according to the Detroit Free Press.

On November 4, police were called to the Lakeland Manor Banquet Hall because Gray reportedly had a firearm at the baby shower. The 29-year-old was armed with an FN Five-seven pistol at the time of the shooting.

Police spokesperson Oliver Gannt told media that Gray was attending the shower of his first child that night. Gray and some of his girlfriend's family members were exchanging words in the hallway before the police's arrival.

Around 6:30 p.m. that night, Lakeland Manor staff reportedly said Gray was attempting to re-enter the building with the gun. They told authorities a shooting between Gray and some other attendee was about to take place.

"We don't know what was going on because nobody will talk to us, but we truly believe with the information we received there was going to be a shootout in St. Clair Shores that Sunday night, and this could have been worse than what it was," said the sheriff.

When officers arrived on the scene, they came with a K-9 dog in tow.

The Detroit Free Press reports officers engaged Gray, demanded he put down his weapon and then he fled on foot. Video from the shooting shows Gray run away from the officers. It is not clear if a gun was in his hand.

Officers commanded the dog to attack Gray moments before gunfire let out.

According to ClickonDetroit, police fired several shots killing Gray. No one is sure who shot the dog. However, it isn't very likely Gray shot anyone because his weapon jammed after the first and only shot. The department is waiting on a ballistic test for more details on the shooting.

"Whatever the results of the ballistic test are, it's not going to change our findings, at all," said Wickersham.

Gray died from shots to the head and to his body.

"The officers didn't react because the dog was shot. The officers reacted because they were being fired upon," said the sheriff.

Gray's family has hired an independent medical examiner while more information slowly comes available.
