A protester at a Wednesday Daunte Wright demonstration seemingly facetiously mocked Donald Trump with the mere introduction of a soup can.
“I’ve been here for the last four nights, and I’m just standing here with soup for my family,” the 18-year-old protester, Tiger Worku, told CNN correspondent Sara Sidner says before winking at the camera. “And we’re just watching all of this unfold, it’s just very unfortunate.”
“You’re not planning on using that are you? Throwing that at the police?” Sidner asked.
“Absolutely not,” he refutes. “Like I said, it’s for my family.”
The man was likely referring to Trump’s remark July 2020 conference with law enforcement officials where the former president listed objects thrown at police during protests.
“And then they have cans of soup. And they throw the cans of soup. That’s better than a brick because you can’t throw a brick. It’s too heavy,” Trump said. “But a can of soup, you can really put some power into that, right? And then when they get caught, they say, ‘No, this is soup for my family.’ They’re so innocent. This is soup for my family. And then when they get caught, they say, ‘No, this is soup for my family.’ They’re so innocent…It’s incredible.”
The former president spoke at a rally in Pittsburgh two months later, vociferously clinging to the anti-soup campaign and adding cans of tuna that were also allegedly used as weapons.
"They're walking up there like 30 cans of soup, they have like 25 cans of tuna, they get caught,” he says before impersonating a hypothetical scenario of a protester saying ‘I'm bringing this home to my family, how dare you stop me?’ then adding, No, no, no. They use it as ammunition. It's terrible."
According to his Twitter page, Worku is President of the Seward Neighborhood Group (SNG), a coalition that strives to make the Minneapolis suburb “a better place to live, work, and play.”
“The goal of Seward Neighborhood Group is to foster a community where neighbors know each other, children can visit friends a few blocks away without fear, going for a walk is a social activity and chatting over the fence is a common activity: a neighborhood where diversity is celebrated and supported,” the SNG mission statement reads. “We want to support and create a business district that is supported by all members of the community, create a main street that is vibrant and safe, even after dark.”
During his interview with Sidner, Worku, who co-authored the first youth-led state Green New Deal, referenced the police use of riot control agents (RCA’s) and how they should be abolished.
“The amount of chemical ammunition coming from police officers and national guardsmen has been disproportional and unnecessary,” the 18-year-old told Blavity. “I think we should abolish the use of chemical ammunitions because you cannot use them on a foreign population. Why use it on your own?”
When asked if the soup can reached his family, Worku gave a seeming affirmative:
“The can of soup reached its final destination safely. ????"
