Minnesota’s Republican Party is facing backlash for holding a public prayer for former police officer Derek Chauvin, who is serving time in prison for the murder of George Floyd in 2020. Floyd’s girlfriend, Courteney Ross, is among those who are speaking out against the party’s decision to honor Chauvin.

“You all had the opportunity to honor fallen soldiers or children who lost their lives,” Ross said at a news conference Thursday, per The Associated Press.. “Instead, you took precious time to purposefully hurt everyone who loved Floyd. And every other family who has lost a loved one to the police.”

Valerie Castile, who lost her son Philando Castile in 2016 when he was shot and killed by Minnesota police, said praying for Chauvin is “the most hurtful thing you can do.”

“You give a moment of silence to a murderer? Come on,” Castile said, per the AP.

What happened after Minnesota Republicans honored Derek Chauvin?

Civil rights leaders, Democratic officials and many other residents spoke out vehemently after a moment of silence was held for Chauvin at the Minnesota Republican Party nominating convention last weekend. Many of the outraged loved ones said the Republican Party’s decision to pay tribute to Chauvin shows disrespect for Floyd and others who were killed by police.

Castile said she also praised the Republicans who didn’t take part in the moment of silence.

“I am proud of the ones who did not do the moment of silence,” she said. “Those that did, they should be reprimanded in some fashion.”

Ross also commended those who abstained from the tribute and urged them to help their colleagues understand why it’s insulting.

“I’m speaking to the few of you who thought it was wrong. Please stand up,” Ross said. “You are public servants.”
