Update (September 15, 2020): The search for a missing Alabama State University student has ended after officials discovered a body in Montgomery Monday afternoon. 

Alabama State University Police, MPD and medic determined the discovered body was Adam Dowdell Jr. who was last seen on Sept. 8 leaving his dorm, WVTM reported.

Montgomery police responded to reports of a possible body on a local street just before 3 p.m. on Monday. 

The circumstances surrounding the 22-year-old's death has not been revealed, but his body was sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science for an autopsy. No arrests have been made in his death. 

University President Quinton T. Ross Jr. released a statement following the news of the sophomore's death, AL.com reported. 

"We all had hoped for a different outcome,'' Ross said. “Losing a student is always difficult, and the Hornet Nation is in mourning over his death. Our thoughts and prayers are certainly with Adam’s mother and the rest of his family and friends as they face this tragic loss.”

Original (September 14, 2020): The mother of an Alabama State sophomore says her son has been missing since September 8 and she’s been on-campus trying to track his whereabouts.

According to AL.com, 22-year-old Adam “Belle” Dowdell left his dormitory to make a trip to the ATM and hasn’t been seen since.

Toya Cohill, Dowdell’s mother, rushed to Montgomery, Alabama on Wednesday with family after receiving texts from his friends stating that he hadn’t returned to the dorm room. The family has been unsuccessful in tracking his phone because the location has been deactivated and the device is out of battery, per AL.com

"I just want my child back,'' Cohill said.

She said she last spoke with her son on Monday, and his siblings were able to check in on him again on Tuesday. By Wednesday, she started receiving messages from his friends that he hadn’t returned to his dorm and was unresponsive, AL.com reports.

“He always talks to all of us,” she said. “From my mama to my daughter to my son, somebody’s going to talk to him every day.”

She said she learned on Tuesday night that he left with another student so that he could get cash from the bank. Dowdell, who doesn’t drive on campus, was last known to be wearing a white shirt, checkerboard pants and the “Taxi”Air Jordan 12 gym shoes. 

Cohill said if her son was planning to be gone long, he would have taken his book bag and phone charger with him, but both were left behind.

"His phone may get down to 1 or 2 percent but he never lets it go dead,'' she said.

Alabaster police posted to social media on Saturday night about Dowdell’s disappearance.

According to The Montgomery Advertiser, campus police were notified of his absence on Wednesday. 

ASU spokesman Ken Mullinax released a statement Saturday, confirming that university police are also investigating the disappearance, per AL.com 

"The Alabama State University Police Department received notification on Wednesday of a male student who was possibly missing. The student is from the Alabaster, Alabama, area and has not been seen since Tuesday afternoon. ASUPD has opened an active, ongoing investigation with help from Central Alabama Crime Stoppers and assistance from surrounding law enforcement agencies,” he said.

The 22-year-old’s mother said she’s been only able to sleep three hours a day as she, friends and family have been tirelessly searching and handing out flyers to locate the sophomore student.
