There will be many memorable moments at Norfolk State University‘s commencement ceremony.

The keynote address will be given by none other than Grammy Award-winning rapper, singer, songwriter and producer Missy Elliott. There will be about 400 graduating students in her audience.

It has been announced that the 109th Commencement will take place at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10, in Joseph G. Echols Memorial Hall on the Norfolk State University campus.

With six studio albums that have received [RIAA] Platinum or higher certification in the United States since her debut on the music scene in 1997, Elliott has broken numerous records.

Hailing from Portsmouth, Virginia, Elliott has sold more than 30 million records in the United States, has won four Grammy Awards, eight MTV Video Music Awards, two American Music Awards, six BET Awards and won the Billboard Women in Music award for Innovator.

Along with working with former First Lady Michelle Obama on her project, “This Is For My Girls,” an anthem to female empowerment, Elliott has also worked with various A-List artists creating greatness.

Elliott has also been honored with the Women’s Entrepreneurship Day Music Pioneer Award from the United Nations.

Recently, a street in Elliott’s hometown of Portsmouth was named after her: “Missy Elliott Blvd.” Additionally, Oct. 17 was designated as “Missy Elliott Day” in the state of Virginia.
