Brittany Stephens, mom to a one-year-old baby who died in a crash involving an off-duty officer in Baton Rouge in October, was arrested Tuesday for failing to properly secure the car seat, The Advocate reports. 

The officer, Christopher Manuel, 28, was reportedly driving 94 mph at the time of the fatal crash, WAFB reported. He was arrested on one count each of negligent homicide and speeding.

According to The Advocate, Stephens, 20, was arrested after investigators found that her daughter's car seat was not properly adjusted for her height. The arrest report stated that the "lack of securing the seat to the vehicle and the loose straps are a contributing factor in the death" and showed "gross negligence" on the part of Stephens.

Stephens was not the driver when the crash occurred, but she reportedly revealed to an officer that she was the one who secured her daughter's car seat. The three other adults in the car at the time of the crash included Breea Gross, 18, Janice Gross, 40, and Seth Eames, 23.

Breea Gross, who was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash, was cited for driving without a license, a seat belt violation and three counts of child safety restraint violation. The one-year-old was taken to the hospital and later died from her injuries. 

According to WBRZ, Manuel has been placed on paid administrative leave and has since been released on $15,000 bond.

Stephens reportedly posted $3,600 bond. This week, East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore III said prosecutors “will review all reports, charges and arrests and make the appropriate decisions based upon facts and law.”
