Via his Revelations Entertainment production company, Morgan Freeman, has optioned the rights to adapt to film a comic titled Planetoid, first released in June 2012 by Image Comics, written and drawn by Ken Garing.

Now put in the development stage, the post-apocalyptic space tale’s official synopsis reads:

Silas, an ex-soldier turned space pirate, finds himself stranded on a mysterious planet in alien territory. As he explores the long-abandoned industrial ruins of the planet’s surface, he will have to fend off roving cyborg militias and a hostile alien military with a bounty on his head. Ultimately, Silas will have to build a coalition amongst the planetoid’s nomadic tribes to make a final stand against the larger tyrannical forces that rule over them.

No word on whether Freeman plans to star in the adaptation as well, or if he’ll only produce for someone else to star.

I wonder if his Rendezvous With Rama adaptation (another sci-fi thriller) that’s been around forever (with David Fincher supposed to direct) will ever happen. He’s not getting any younger. That project was first announced at least 5 years ago.

Considering those 2 feature films, as well as his most recent work on the big screen, and his Emmy-nominated hit Science Channel series Through The Wormhole, which returns for an all-new 5fth season next month, clearly Freeman is a lover of scientific exploration – fact or fiction – on screen.

Freeman was last seen on the big screen in  Warner Bros’ Transcendence

CBS picked up a new drama executive produced by Freeman, titled Madam Secretary, which will follow the professional and personal life of a woman Secretary of State. Tea Leoni stars.
