New Line is officially developing a sequel to last year’s Mortal Kombat, which premiered in theaters and HBO Max, becoming one of the most-watched movies released on the streamer.
The next film is in early development, and many of the original’s stars are expected to return for the sequel.
First details on 'Mortal Kombat 2'
Jeremy Slater, who is the head writer of Disney+ Marvel series Moon Knight, is writing the sequel. No other announcements about cast or crew have been announced, and the script hasn’t been written this early in development.
Slater commented on the news on Twitter saying:
“Beyond excited to be joining this team! We’re building something bigger and better and bloodier that’s going to blow people’s minds.”

The first film was released last year
Mortal Kombat followed Cole Young (Lewis Tan), who is a chosen fighter along with Jax (Mehcad Brooks), Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee) and Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), who must compete against the outer world to save the earth from being overtaken by dark forces. The tournament the series is famous for didn’t occur in the first movie, leaning into the film telling its audience that there is more to come.
The first film set up a number of possibilities for more enteric into the franchise, hinting at new characters and a possible prequel. The world is ripe for more stories, and its performance on HBO Max warrants more of the gruesome tournament series.
Tan, Brooks, McNamee are three characters expected to return and there could be more.
The trio commented on the news on Twitter.
