The mother of a teenager who was killed by police in 2012 has vowed to dispel a false narrative about her son's murder.

In February 2012, 18-year-old Ramarley Graham was being followed by police in a suspected drug deal. Police officers John McLoughlin and Richard Haste chased Graham into his grandmother's home. Initial reports claimed that officers got into a tussle with an armed Graham, prompting Haste to shoot the teen in a second-floor bathroom.

But according to The New York Daily News, internal New York Police Department documents obtained by Graham's mother, Constance Malcolm, through a Manhattan Supreme Court lawsuit indicates that there have been false and inaccurate accounts about Graham and the crime scene.

Malcolm has been working diligently to clear her son's name. She says that he was not running away from police, and he was proven to be unarmed.

“None of that happened,” noted Constance Malcolm, Graham’s mother. “The NYPD immediately put out false information to justify the killing.”

Documents show that a police officer that seized Haste’s 9-mm gun wrote in a report that the weapon had been touched by Graham. Another written by crime scene unit detective Paul Brown described Haste being in a “foot pursuit” after an attempt to “initiate an arrest.”

The trials of Haste and two others involved revealed that there was no foot chase, and the reports were false.

“Maybe he was running because he was guilty of something — he was running because he was doing something — that’s very damaging. They never retracted that lie. It leads to a false narrative," Malcolm said of police.

Haste resigned Sunday after discovering he would be fired reports The New York Post. He was found guilty of all charges including using poor tactics.

“Officer Richard Haste decided to quit the NYPD upon being informed that on Friday March 24th the Department Trial Commissioner found him guilty on all counts and recommended his employment be terminated,” the NYPD said in a statement.

However, Malcolm believes that Haste got off easy and that it is difficult to trust police after this tragedy.

“Every step of the way, the mayor and NYPD have dragged their heels and have refused to hold officers accountable for murdering my son,” she said in a statement. “How is my youngest son supposed to trust and believe in cops when he saw they murdered his brother in front of him and there is zero accountability?”
