A North Carolina mother is being charged with involuntary manslaughter for the death of her 1-year-old son who was swept away by flooding during Hurricane Florence.

The Union County Sheriff's Office announced the charges against 20-year-old Dazia Ideah Lee on Monday, reports CNN.

“After an exhaustive investigation, Union County Sheriff’s detectives have filed criminal charges against a Charlotte mother for driving around barricades on NC 218 that resulted in the tragic drowning death of her 1-year-old son last month,” the office wrote in a statement.

Lee was also charged with a misdemeanor for driving on a closed highway. She was issued a summons, and her first court appearance is scheduled for November 20.

Lee spoke to The Washington Post about her son’s death in September.

She said that one evening she left her home with little Kaiden Lee-Welch, believing the worst of the storm had passed. She drove around two orange barrels after she saw another driver go down the road. When Lee’s car hit the flood waters, it hydroplaned and began to sink. She was able to free herself and her son, but the rush of water was too strong.

The baby’s body was found the following morning.

"I did everything I could," Lee told a reporter. "From the moment I was pregnant until the moment I lost him. I did everything I could to save and protect him."
