An MSNBC interview took a strange twist when a guest of the show compared Meghan Markle to trailer trash on Saturday.
The vitriol seen in the viral clip of the MSNBC Live airing makes Markle and Prince Harry's January decision to live a more private life by stepping away from their duties all the more praiseworthy.
The video shows journalist Victoria Mather being interviewed from NBC’s London office about the couple’s recent return to the United Kingdom. Mather told anchor Lindsey Reiser that the British public turned on Markle because she tried to disrespect Queen Elizabeth II.
“I think what has really, really upset the British public is that Meghan Markle, who many people consider as only, you know, five clicks up from trailer trash, has actually tried to disrespect the queen,” Mather said. “And the queen is the most respected person, most respected woman, in the world.”

Mather, formerly a writer with Vanity Fair covering the royal family, currently works as chief travel correspondent at Air Mail, which was founded by former Vanity Fair editor-in-chief Graydon Carter, according to BuzzFeed News.
In September, she wrote about the royal family for Air Mail and used the words "trailer trash" and “Duchess of Excess” in reference to Markle.
“As for the reported feud between the duchesses, that was a story waiting to happen," she wrote. "Catherine comes from a stable, close-knit family. Meghan comes from a sadly dysfunctional family, leading to her being unpleasantly trolled as trailer trash.”
The duke and duchess returned to Britain this week to complete their final official royal duties after moving to Canada. On Saturday, they attended the Mountbatten Festival of Music at the Royal Albert Hall in London, where they received a rousing ovation, BBC reports.
In October, they sued British tabloid publication Mail on Sunday, accusing the paper of publishing false stories about the duchess, CNBC reported. At the start of the new year, the couple made the big “Megxit” announcement with the following statement:
“We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.”
The couple made one more engagement at the annual Commonwealth Service at Westminster Abbey Monday before taking off for Canada. Although there have been rumors of a rift between the royal family members, Markle was seen being cordial and waving at Prince William and Kate Middleton.
