A Muslim student attending Chartiers Valley High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was recently attacked by a fellow student while trying to use the bathroom. Podcast host and Islamic educator Qasim Rashid tweeted a video of the incident showing the 14-year-old, who was wearing a hijab, being told by a white student that she could not use the bathroom. Pittsburgh Action News 4 reports the video was recorded by senior Alexis Work who said the other student wanted to use the stall to vape.

"You're lucky you're from another language because I will crush you, b***h," the second girl said before she began shoving and hitting the Muslim student, who was identified as a former Syrian refugee. The unnamed victim was later taken to UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh where she was admitted overnight and treated for a concussion.

The school district released an online statement stating it does not condone violence and assuring that student safety and security is its top priority.

"Chartiers Valley School District is appalled and disturbed by the incident which occurred last Friday, December 14, 2018, involving high school students," the district wrote. "The District does not condone or tolerate violence of any kind, and in cooperation with law enforcement, is taking swift action for the safety and security of our students."

"Consequences will be enforced to the fullest extent, according to District policy and the Law," the statement continued. "The Chartiers Valley School District considers matters of student safety and security to be of utmost importance and strives to provide a safe and welcoming learning environment for all students and staff."

Criminal charges are pending, and Collier Township police say they are ruling out the possibility of a hate crime. It is unclear what disciplinary action Chartiers will take moving forward.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations is offering legal support for the family and is pushing state and federal officials to investigate the matter.
