I arrived early to the Blavity House on my first day at the Essence Festival in New Orleans. After taking the bus from the airport, I arrived in our sweet location, settled in, met the girls and received an awesome gift bag. Our first stop was the French Quarter, where we came across some dope street performers. After visiting Gumbo Shop, we headed over to one of New Orleans’ most iconic restaurants, Cafe Du Monde.

After getting our fill of beignets and coffee, we went to the Happy Hour Kickoff event hosted by Blavity, Noirlinians and DOPEciety. There was a moment where it felt so right to be around so many creative-minded black people; it felt like we were all a part of a family. I’m not from New Orleans, but in that moment I felt right at home. After enjoying the Happy Hour event, some of us went to Dress It for a late dinner and later Bourbon Street to explore New Orleans nightlife.

The Black Girl Magic t-shirts we wore were a hit. People literally stopped us on the street. We even went inside CVS and ran into fellow black women here for Essence Festival that we invited to the Blavity Groupme and to our events.
