The NAACP’s opposition to the Trump administration has escalated to a new level, with the group officially calling for President Donald Trump to be removed from office. The civil rights organization believes that Trump is no longer capable of exercising his duties as president and warns that he is endangering Americans through his actions.

NAACP calls for removal of ‘unfit, unwell, and unhinged’ president

“The NAACP demands urgent action to invoke the 25th Amendment in response to alarming signs of President Trump’s deteriorating health and increasingly delusional behavior,” the organization wrote in a press release issued Thursday. The statement explained that “this is the first time the NAACP has ever called for the 25th Amendment to be invoked,” warning that Trump’s “rhetoric and actions” have “reached a level of instability that poses a direct threat to the well-being of millions of Americans and the integrity of our armed forces.”

The NAACP explained in its statement that its stance “is not merely a matter of political disagreement; it is a matter of national security, global stability, and the very fabric of our democracy.” NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson called Trump “unfit, unwell, and unhinged.”

“When the person entrusted with the highest office in the land demonstrates a disregard for truth, stability, and the well-being of the American people,” Johnson argued, “it’s a threat to the entire nation and the world. Trump must be immediately removed from office.”

NAACP escalates warnings as calls grow to remove Trump

The statement from the NAACP comes as a growing number of voices call for Trump to be removed from office via the 25th Amendment or other means. As Blavity previously reported, the 25th Amendment, ratified in 1967, has a never-before used provision that empowers the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet to declare the president unable to fulfill his duties, a move which would transfer presidential authority to the vice president. A number of political figures called for Trump to be removed through the 25th Amendment after the president threatened Iran with destruction in disturbing social media posts over the past few days; the NAACP referenced these threats in its call for Trump to be removed.

The NAACP has had a contentious relationship with Trump and has warned of his harmful impact to Black Americans and to the country as a whole. In 2025, the NAACP declined to invite Trump to its national convention, the first time in 116 years that the sitting president was not invited to the event. The organization also sued the Trump administration after the Department of Education withheld federal funding to schools that were alleged to have violated Trump’s anti-DEI orders. The organization has also sounded alarms concerning other conservative leaders and their policies, such as issuing a 2023 warning to avoid the state of Florida, which the NAACP said was “hostile” toward Black people and other marginalized communities due to the policies of the Republican-led state government.

Now, the NAACP is giving its strongest warning yet against the nation’s top leader, calling for the president to be removed by his fellow Republicans in his Cabinet. Rather than a partisan issue, the civil rights organization is warning that removing Trump is a necessity in order to keep the country safe.
