The Vice Mayor of Coral Springs, Florida, was found dead in her home after police responded to an apparent domestic violence dispute. Her husband is now in custody and charged with premeditated murder, and the incident has left dead a rising Democratic Party star who may have been preparing a congressional run.

Vice mayor killed in apparent domestic violence incident

Florida Politics first reported Wednesday that Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen had been fatally shot in her home, with police sources describing the situation as a domestic violence incident. According to Florida Politics, a friend of the vice mayor called police after failing to reach Metayer Bowen but instead reaching her husband, Stephen Bowen, who “sounded suspicious” during the phone call. Police then conducted a wellness check of the Bowen home, finding Metayer Bowen deceased; police then put out a call for Bowen, who had fled to Plantation, Florida. Bowen was later taken into custody at a friend’s home in the Landmark Towers apartment complex.

Remembering a rising star in Florida politics

Metayer Bowen had been seen as a local rising star within the Democratic Party. An environmental scientist with a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, she became the first Black and first Haitian American to serve on the Coral Springs Commission in 2020. In 2024, she served as the Florida Caribbean vote director for both the Biden and then the Harris presidential campaigns. She also gained notoriety for speaking out against racist rumors spread by now-Vice President JD Vance about Haitian Americans. An unnamed source told Florida Politics that Metayer Bowen was preparing to run for Congress before she was killed. Her death has led to an outpouring of tributes from fellow Florida politicians and elected officials. Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried shared in a statement that Metayer Bowen was someone who “loved her community deeply and believed, with every fiber of her being, that a better and more equitable future was possible for all of us,” according to Florida Politics.

Husband charged with murder, held without bond

The South Florida Sun Sentinel reported that Bowen has been charged with premeditated murder, as well as tampering with or fabricating physical evidence. He appeared in court Thursday morning for a bond hearing, during which he was ordered to be held without bond. Bowen is a certified radiologic technologist and is listed in public records as the chief operating officer of the Hollywood-based nonprofit organization Men of St. Luke Inc., a Masonic lodge formerly known as The Most Worshipful Union Grand Lodge of Florida, St. Luke Lodge #530, according to state records. Bowen has also presented himself on social media as a gun enthusiast, posting videos of himself at shooting ranges and writing in his Instagram profile bio, “God | Husband | Armed.”

As Bowen faces charges in the death of his wife, residents of Coral Springs are mourning the loss of a dedicated public servant who was known for her work to make their community more affordable. Metayer Bowen’s fellow Democratic officials, meanwhile, are remembering her dedication and praising a promising career violently cut short.
