Fans of Netflix’s new series Survival Of The Thickest may be calling for a second season already, but the show’s star and creator Michelle Buteau is tuning out the noise until the industry strikes end.
During a recent interview with Decider, Buteau revealed that she isn’t even thinking about a potential second season of her show, noting that writers need to have their “basic needs” met before she that can happen.
It is worth noting that this interview was conducted before SAG-AFTRA also decided to strike, as Buteau would have probably said that season two would also be contingent upon that strike as well.
Michelle Buteau serves as the show's creator, star, co-writer, and executive producer.
Here’s an official description:
Survival of the Thickest centers on Mavis Beaumont (Buteau). Black, plus-size and newly single (not by her choice!), Mavis unexpectedly finds herself having to rebuild her life as a struggling stylist. She’s determined to not only survive but thrive with the support of her chosen family, a body positive attitude, and a cute v-neck with some lip gloss. The scripted comedy is based on Buteau’s acclaimed book of essays.
Buteau refuses to shy away from advocating for writers.
“I would love nothing more for a Season 2 and to talk about it, but I think it’s most important to acknowledge that the WGA is in a very crazy negotiation phase. [They’re] trying to get what they need, which is the basic of the basics,” Buteau shared with Decider when asked about the potential for a second season of Survival Of The Thickest. “I don’t even want to really think about a Season 2 until I feel like everyone is good and taken care of, and they have a contract that they feel good about.”
As of now, Buteau wants viewers to "love Season 1".
“There’s nothing worse than having writers show up and then have to leave early to go to their second and third job because they can’t support themselves with the one job that they have,” she continued.
The actress added, “Basic needs like health insurance, residuals and better paychecks shouldn’t be a luxury, it should be a standard. We’ll get to Season 2 when we want to and when we need to.”
Survival Of The Thickest is available to stream only on Netflix.
