Rodney Evans’ sophomore effort, The Happy Sad, which made its World Premiere at Frameline San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival, as a Showcase Screening, a couple of months ago, will open in theaters today, Friday, August 16th at the IFC Center in NYC and at the Sundance Sunset Cinema in LA.

As Rodney notes, via email, the theatrical release is a distribution campaign spearheaded by the filmmaking team, and many theaters across the country are waiting to see how the film does this weekend in NY and LA before making a commitment to a theatrical run.

In essence, this opening weekend counts!

Rodney’s 2nd feature follows two young couples in New York – one black and gay, one white and heterosexual – who find their lives intertwined as they create new relationship norms, explore sexual identity, and redefine monogamy.

The film’s cast includes: LeRoy McClain (The History Boys), Sorel Carradine (The Good Doctor), Charlie Barnett (Gayby, Chicago Fire), Cameron Scoggins (Lovers), Maria Dizzia (Martha Marcy May Marlene, Louie), Sue Jean Kim (Bachelorette), Jamie Harrold (Erin Brockovich, The New Tenants – 2010 Academy Award Winner – Best Live Action short), and Michael Nathanson (Side Effects, Time Freak – 2012 Academy Award Nomination – Best Live Action short).

Rodney will be doing Q&As at IFC on Friday and Saturday after the 8:25pm shows, and again on Sunday after the 6:20pm show, along with screenwriter Ken Urban and many of the actors from the film (LeRoy McClain, Cameron Scoggins, Jamie Harrold, Sue Jean Kim and MichaeNathanson).

Sorel Carradine will be doing Q&Aat Sundance Sunset Cinema in LA for the Friday and Saturday evening shows.
