Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins’ wife is being charged with felony assault for allegedly injuring the football player during a domestic violence dispute, according to ESPN.
Following an altercation at The Cosmopolitan hotel in Las Vegas earlier this month, Kalabrya Gondrezick-Haskins was charged with battery and domestic violence resulting in bodily harm.
The 24-year-old sustained injuries that were “substantial in nature,” including a split upper lip and a missing tooth, in addition to other injuries to his mouth that would require dental work to repair his teeth, KTNV Las Vegas reported.
“I want her out of my room,” Haskins told a security officer at The Cosmopolitan, according to 8 News Now Las Vegas. “She hit me and cut my lip open.”
During a police search of the hotel room, officers found a piece of his tooth and blood. Haskins says he recalled engaging in a fight with his wife but had no recollection of being punched in the mouth.
The confrontation between Haskins and his wife took place on July 3 as the couple traveled to Las Vegas for a friend’s wedding and to celebrate their union after marrying in March. The two had been dating for a year and a half.
When interviewed by police, Gondrezick-Haskins told investigators she intervened in a fight between Haskins and one of his friends earlier in the evening. She also told authorities she had fallen to the floor during that scuffle and hit the back of her head, enduring neck pain as well as bruises on her legs. Police made note that she "could not remember who, if anyone had battered her."
Gondrezick-Haskins has posted bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 3.
"We are aware of the situation but will have no comment," the Steelers said on Thursday when asked for comment.
In 2019, Haskins was a first-round draft pick when he was signed to the Washington Football Team. After being released from the team for violating COVID-19 protocols, the football player was picked up by the Steelers. He signed a reserve/future contract with them in January.
"Gotta be accountable for the decisions you make in life, and be able to move forward and make the best decisions," Haskins said about his departure during an interview, CBS Sports reported. "I have no doubt in my mind that I can overcome this, grow and become a better person, a better athlete, a better quarterback and a better leader because of this. That's something I'm praying and working on to show. I'm hoping that a new change in scenery will help with that."
