Former 49ers and Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman, 33, is in police custody after he allegedly crashed his SUV into a construction zone, tried to break into his in-laws’ home and threatened to kill himself in Redmond, Washington Wednesday morning. 

Washington State Patrol received a call around 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday from a construction worker who said an intoxicated driver struck a barricade at a closed construction site along the freeway, the Associated Press reported. Authorities say the car was registered to Sherman.

After he struck the barricade, he drove away but his car became disabled shortly after leaving the scene. 

Around 1:49 a.m., someone called Redmond police from his in-laws' home, saying Sherman was trying to enter the residence. 

When officers arrived at the scene they tried to keep Sherman calm, but the incident escalated when officers informed the 33-year-old that he was under arrest. 

Officials say Sherman’s demeanor changed and he tried walking away from the arresting officer. Another officer saw what was happening and released a K-9 to prevent Sherman from getting away. As a result, Sherman sustained minor injuries to his lower leg and was treated at a local hospital before being taken to jail.

During the 911 call, Sherman’s wife, Ashley Moss, can be heard telling dispatchers "He’s trying to leave now. He’s being aggressive. He’s wrestling with my uncle." 

"He’s threatening to kill himself. He’s sent text messages to people saying he’s going to hang himself," she said, USA Today reported.

Moss told the Seattle Times that this isn’t Sherman’s “character” to behave in this manner.

"My kids were not harmed in the incident. He's a good person and this is not his character. We're doing all right, just trying to get him out. I want people to know no one was injured," Moss said. 

During a news conference on Wednesday, Redmond Police Department Chief Darrel Lowe said Sherman faces several charges including suspicion of burglary domestic violence, resisting arrest and malicious mischief, ESPN reported.

The former cornerback could face more charges related to the hit-and-run incident. Washington State Patrol Capt. Ron Mead says that his department is ready to refer Sherman to prosecutors for a potential misdemeanor DUI and hit-and-run charges.

“We’re very fortunate,” Mead said. "These crews are out working at night at great risk to themselves, and here you have an impaired driver or suspected impaired driver who placed not only other motorists at risk, but those people that are doing construction at risk.”

The 33-year-old is currently a free agent and the NFL says he could face disciplinary action.

The NFL said in a statement that it “investigates any incident involving law enforcement and if there is a violation of the personal conduct policy the player would be facing discipline.”

Sherman currently serves as the vice president of the NFL Players Association’s [NFLPA] executive committee. The association hasn’t said whether Sherman will keep his position.

"We were made aware of an arrest last night of one of our player leaders for an alleged domestic violence incident and have activated our domestic violence crisis protocol for the protection and support of everyone involved," the NFLPA said in a statement. "We will continue to monitor events closely as more facts are made available to us."

Sherman is awaiting his first court appearance where a judge will determine if his arrest was justified or if he should be released.
