Although he’s a father of 12, Nick Cannon wants to dive deeper into understanding children.
The 42-year-old comedian-turned-TV host appeared on the podcast The Language of Love with Dr. Laura Berman earlier this month. Cannon spoke with Dr. Berman and discussed his educational journey. He stated he is working toward obtaining his Ph.D. in divinity. He also revealed that he plans to change the scope of study for his master’s from psychology to child psychology. “Oh, the presence of a father and how much will they need you and the Freudian aspect of reverting back to your childhood trauma, or the lack thereof. Nature vs nurture. These are conversations I have several times every single day,” Cannon said on the podcast.
Dr. Berman asked the comedian if the conversation was “with the naysayers” or “with the mamas” of his 12 children. “Nah, not naysayers. But I’m like, I’m living, whether in therapy on my own or even just wanting to make sure that every single child has what they need, developmentally,” he responded. “And emotionally. I’m studying the brain and at what point does sensory matter.”
The Wild’n Out star holds a bachelor’s degree in criminology from Howard University. Throughout the rest of the podcast, Cannon spoke about having difficulty being fully available when two of his children were sick at the same time. “And I was willing to be there physically, but I don’t know if I was available at the level that she needed me emotionally,” he said.
While Cannon has always claimed to be an active father, there have been instances where the “Cannon dozen,” became a lot to handle. As Blavity previously covered, he caught some heat when he forgot to name his daughter, Onyx Cole when listing off his kid’s names. He shares the 9-month-old with model LaNisha Cole.
A couple of months later, Cannon screwed up Mother’s Day when he accidentally mixed up the cards with hand-written messages for his children’s mothers. He spoke about the mistake on his podcast, The Daily With Nick Cannon. “As I’m writing a handwritten message, I get the cards mixed up. And then so when one baby mama reads the card about how I feel about the other baby mama …See if I would just got some generic s**t that everybody else got, that wouldn’t have happened.”
