Nneka Onuorah has answered her higher calling. A year ago, she was a successful producer at BET whose credits included Black Girls Rock! But after six years she decided to leave it all behind. Onuorah wanted to create new projects that spoke to her on a personal level.
As a black lesbian, she didn’t really see herself represented in media. So Onuorah began working on a documentary called The Same Difference. It’s a feature that tackles the issue of gender role discrimination within the black lesbian community.
Identifying as feminine or aggressive is a game changer.
The Same Difference also tackles the backlash against bisexuals, as well as the racial divide between black and non-black cultures. “A lot of places in media think our stories are irrelevant … and that same struggle happens within LGBT media sources, [which] still question why black lesbian stories are important to tell.” Onuorah said.
Onuorah is the change she wants to see in the world. She’s traveled across the country promoting various projects and initiatives. Her latest being the We Are All Women campaign, which focuses on issues affecting black lesbians and their livelihood.
Onuorah’s dedication to gender quality has lit a fire in her belly. “I think about changing the world every night before I go to sleep … and that passion and that purpose, when you find [it], it just drives you.”
