During the Diamond League meet in London on Sunday, Noah Lyles made history as the fastest man in the world after breaking Usain Bolt’s longtime record. Following his 19.47 mark, the American sprinter is officially the fastest 200 meter racer to run in less than 20 seconds. According to BET, this is the 35th time Lyles has accomplished that feat.

Lyles faced both Britain’s national sprint double champion Zharnel Hughes and Botswana’s sprinter Letsile Tebogo on the 200 meter, according to Daily Mail. With both of the sprinter sensations on his heels, Lyles eventually put himself ahead, creating distance between him and his rivals on the track.

Tebogo marked a record for Africa by running 19.50, according to the Olympics. Hughes was crowned the fastest man in the world in June after running a time of 9.83 seconds in the 100m at the New York City Grand Prix last month.

Following his winning moment, Lyles spoke with BBC about his dedication to winning and what he hopes to achieve in the near future.

“I said it was going to be fast. I told Zharnel he could easily break that British record, and he smashed it,” Lyles told the BBC. “The 200 will always be mine. She’s my wife. Fourth 200 of the year. I’m not letting go of her. She’s mine.”

“My dad [world 4x400m relay gold medalist Kevin Lyles] grew up in that era racing against Michael Johnson, and I remember the Americans sweeping everything,” he said. “Then we had to watch the Jamaicans dominating. I said to myself, ‘When I get there, I want to make sure the USA is dominating again,’” he added.

Lyles’ next competition will be the World Athletic Championships in Budapest, where he will race in the 100 meter and 200 meter in August 2023.
