Her last project, The OWLs (Older Wiser Lesbians) now on home video, Cheryl Dunye's follow-up to that feature film, a romantic comedy titled Mommy Is Coming, made its debut at the 2012 Berlin Film Festival in the Panorama section in February, which is when we last wrote about the work.
It's been announced today that TLA Releasing as acquired distributiong rights to the film, for release in the USA, Canada and France markets.
TLA Releasing’s Adam Silver told ScreenDaily exclusively: "… very excited to be releasing Mommy Is Coming in North America and France. A truly boundary-breaking and thrilling film by a real visionary, it truly reflects the kind of cutting-edge cinema TLA is always proud to associate with."
Synopsis for Mommy Is Coming:
Set in the international creative melting pot Berlin, this raunchy romantic comedy of errors confronts the last lesbian taboo: Mommy. A take on screwball romantic comedies and porn topped off w/Dunye's ingenious form of storytelling.
It's worth noting that Dunye's feature film debut, The Watermelon Woman, premiered at the Berlin Film Festival as well, in 1996, where it won the Teddy Award (an international award given to the best LGBT-themed film at the festival annually).
Dunye also co-stars in the film, as she often does with her work, along with Lil Harlow, Papí Coxxx and Maggie Tapert.
A trailer for that I believe is for German audiences has surfaced (hence the nudity and such, as you'll never see this in a Stateside trailer – well a red-band trailer maybe), and is embedded below; here's a glimpse of the wackiness you can expect from Mommy Is Coming (poster underneath):
