Cynthia Nixon made headlines by going from Sex and the City to "Politics and the City," when she announced her gubernatorial run in the state of New York.

Running on the Democratic ticket and challenging current Democratic governor Andrew Cuomo, Nixon recently attended a Rakim and Eric B concert in what appeared to be an attempt to win the black vote. Nixon has positioned herself as a woke, liberal alternative to Cuomo. Adding to her particular form of branding, the former actress posted a new campaign video to Twitter highlighting her support of marijuana legalization.

A lot of you have been asking about my position on marijuana. Here it is. pic.twitter.com/iEKLHgClFN— Cynthia Nixon (@CynthiaNixon) April 11, 2018

“There are a lot of good reasons for legalizing marijuana, but for me, it comes down to this: we have to stop putting people of color in jail for something that white people do with impunity,” Nixon said, noting that 80 percent of New Yorkers arrested for marijuana are black or Latinx, despite the weed usage rates being similar across racial lines. State statistics show that fifth-degree marijuana possession arrests are 48 percent black, 38 percent Latino and nine percent white.

“White people do get arrested for marijuana, but what we’re saying is you’re more likely to get arrested for marijuana if you’re black or Latino,” noted Kassandra Frederique, New York state director for the Drug Policy Alliance.

According to the Associated Press, Nixon — as little as two weeks ago — blamed the state's reluctance to fully legalize marijuana on revenue analysis. Now, however, she says there is a deeper, sinister link to racism behind officials' refusal to legalize weed.

Nixon ended the campaign video with a simple question, "The simple truth is, for white people, the use of marijuana has effectively been legal for a long time. Isn't it time we legalize it for everybody else?"
