A sliver of justice for the family of Eric Garner has finally come five years after his death.

On Monday, Police Commissioner James O'Neill announced the firing of Officer Daniel Pantaleo during a press conference.

Pantaleo, who was involved in the fatal Staten Island arrest in July 2014, put Garner in a banned chokehold. Garner was confronted by officers for allegedly selling illegal cigarettes on the street.

The fate of Officer Pantaleo followed an administrative judge recommending his firing earlier this month. Back in June, he was found guilty of reckless assault during a departmental trial.

Commissioner O'Neill claims that the decision was "difficult" to make but is one that he's confident is the "correct decision."

He also went on to say that “there are absolutely no victors today…we must move forward together as one city.”

The decision follows a 46-page opinion, obtained by The New York Times, where an administrative judge found that the account Pantaleo gave following Garner’s death was “implausible and self-serving.”

Commissioner O'Neill echoed sentiments of several family members and activists regarding the delayed investigation by calling it "unfair to the family."

Garner, who's dying plea of "I can't breathe" on camera sparked nationwide outrage, ignited an outcry against police brutality.
